Historic Yates Mill

From the 1700s, before Raleigh was Raleigh and Cary was Cary, this mill site was a place where people gathered, worked, got their corn and wheat milled and enjoyed community.

Cary Train Depot

Since the mid-1800s, whether coming or going, people have gathered at Cary's train station as they connected to new destinations and journeys.

A Cary Train Depot Memory: “It was the first time I had ever ridden on a train! My husband and I were riding it to Philadelphia, PA, to pick up my brother’s truck (which we named Big Red).”

Page Walker Arts & History Center 

A fancy hotel in the middle of nowhere, a boarding house, a family home—and now the Page-Walker Arts & History Center—this historic building continues to bring people together.

Cary First Christian Church

From its brush arbor beginnings to the current church, this Cary African American congregation has gathered together for more than 158 years—and is still going strong.

 

A Cary First Christian Church Memory: “I remember going there the first time and everyone was so welcoming and helpful. I knew this was the church for me.”

Bond Brothers Beer Company

Cedar Street, originally known as Railroad Street, was once Cary's bustling main street and hub of commerce. Today, Bond Brothers Beer Company is part of a new generation bringing people together in downtown Cary.

A Bond Brothers Memory: “...I remember wondering why Americans didn’t make better beer. After an intensive Tae-Kwan-Do practice, a friend took me to Bond Brothers in Downtown Cary, where this skeptical Frenchman was happily proven wrong about American beer. I left with a six-pack.”

Downtown Cary Park Fountain

Cary Arts Center

Once North Carolina's first public high school, the Cary Arts Center continues to bring people together for classes, theater, music, and camps.

A Cary Arts Center Memory: “I got to see Chip Shearin perform there. Damn Chip!” 

Downtown Cary Park

"See you at the fountain" is an easy way to meet up. Today, the fountain is a gathering place where friends and families come together to enjoy Downtown Cary Park and downtown Cary.

A Cary Memory: "Highlights were the ‘Light Show’ and hanging out at the fire pit with three generations of family.”

Pasmore/Cotton House

This historic Cary home once housed two teachers from Cary High School during Cary’s early years and welcomed a few boarders. Today, the Pasmore/Cotton House continues its story as Vino and Tap and a place to gather near the park.

Ashworth Drug Store & Soda Fountain

A favorite meeting place on the corner of Chatham and Academy Streets, this building began as Uncle Bob's Corner in the early 1900s and later became home to popular luncheonette counters within drug stores. Today, its tradition of bringing people together continues as Blue Moon Bakery gets ready to take the helm.

Esteamed Coffee Shop

Once a little home on Academy Street, then a gift shop and flower shop, this welcoming cottage is now home to Esteamed Coffee, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit creating meaningful jobs and social opportunities for adults with disabilities—and a wonderful place to meet up for coffee.

 

An Esteamed Memory: “We really enjoy the people & the great coffee we have when we visit! The atmosphere is so friendly!”

Fortnight Brewery

As Cary grew, businesses moved west. Today, Fortnight Brewery brings people together in what was once a warehouse at the corner of Chatham Street and Maynard Road.

 

A Cary Memory: “During Covid times, one of the only places I was able to hang out with friends was Fortnight. We had many laughs and joyful times during an otherwise dark period.”
